Anna Politkovskaya’s last book was unveiled by former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev on 30 May in Moscow in the presence of members of the Novaya Gazeta staff as well as her children and former husband.
Entitled “Za Shto” (Why), it is the first book of Politkovskaya’s since 2002 to being properly distributed in Russia and in the Russian language (with an initial edition of 7,000 copies). She was murdered on 7 October 2006.
The 980-page volume combines a selection of Politkovskaya’s writings with tributes from her Novaya Gazeta colleagues, well-known figures and friends. With chapter headings such as “ChechNya,” “The Army” and “Life,” it includes essays on some of her favourite subjects as well as previously unpublished pictures. There are also personal writings on such topics as Argentine tango, her dog, Paris and royal marriages, which show a different side to this most emblematic of Russian investigative journalists.
